Homemade Fish Sticks Recipe
Ingredients:
For the Fish Sticks:
- 1 pound cod, halibut, or catfish filets, thawed if frozen
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- 1 cup panko bread crumbs
- 2 teaspoons Old Bay seasoning
- 1 large egg
- 1 tablespoon water
- 1/3 cup flour
- Cooking spray
- 1 lemon, cut into wedges
For the Tartar Sauce:
- 1/3 cup mayonnaise
- 2 tablespoons pickle relish (sweet or dill)
- 1 tablespoon finely chopped red onion
- 1 1/2 teaspoons chopped fresh dill
- 1 teaspoon capers (optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
Preparation:
Prepare the Fish: Pat the fish filets dry with paper towels. Cut the filets into even strips, about 1 inch wide, and season both sides with salt and pepper.
Set Up Dredging Stations: Place the flour in a shallow dish. In another dish, whisk together the egg and water. In a third dish, combine the panko bread crumbs and Old Bay seasoning.
Coat the Fish: Dredge each fish stick in the flour, shaking off any excess. Dip it into the egg mixture, allowing any excess to drip off, then coat it in the seasoned panko crumbs, pressing gently to adhere.
Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and lightly coat with cooking spray.
Bake the Fish Sticks: Place the coated fish sticks on the prepared baking sheet. Lightly spray the tops with cooking spray. Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until the fish is cooked through and the breading is golden and crispy.
Prepare the Tartar Sauce: While the fish sticks are baking, mix together the mayonnaise, pickle relish, chopped red onion, dill, capers (if using), and lemon juice in a small bowl. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
